Behind the scenes

New technologies are being rolled out to underpin our next generation network products

Behind the scenes

Our Technologies

Telecom is progressing one of the most comprehensive and extensive technology upgrades in New Zealand. By the end of 2011, 80% of New Zealanders will have access to broadband connections delivering speeds between 10Mbps and 20 Mbps.

Changes to the network include:

GPON

Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) technology is the global technology of choice for delivering super-fast broadband to end-users over optical fibre networks.

GPON technology can be used to provide both voice and broadband services and is being employed in our 'fibre to the home' trial. Find out more about GPON>

VDSL2

Very High-Speed Digital Subscriber Line 2 (VDSL2) is the third generation of DSL access technology, designed to support the wide deployment of triple play services such as voice, video, data, high definition television (HDTV) and interactive gaming.

VDSL2 can run from the local telephone exchanges or their associated cabinets. It is expected to offer customers who are on very short lines (dependant on attenuation and copper line quality) a significantly faster broadband experience than ADSL2+. Find out more about VDSL2>

ADSL2+

ADSL2+ technology is being deployed in the new cabinets to allow faster broadband over the existing copper wire and the introduction of new services built on Enhanced UBA. Find out more about ADSL2+>

Cabinetisation

3,600 roadside cabinets and 2,500 kms of new fibre optic cable is being added to the network to bring broadband equipment closer to end-users. For more information on Cabinetisation visit Chorus.
